Warhammer fans often face a delightful dilemma: should you dive into the grim darkness of the 31st millennium with Horus Heresy, or explore the fantastical realms of Age of Sigmar? Both systems offer incredible miniature kits, rich lore, and immersive gameplay, but they cater to different preferences. In this comparison, we'll pit the Horus Heresy Siege Assault Battle Group against typical Age of Sigmar starter sets to help you decide which box deserves your hobby budget.

Whether you're a returning player or new to the hobby, choosing the right starting point is crucial. We'll look at the contents, building experience, painting opportunities, and overall value of each, so you can make an informed choice. By the end, you'll know which Warhammer box aligns with your gaming style and collection goals.

What's in the Horus Heresy Siege Assault Battle Group?

The Horus Heresy: Siege Assault Battle Group is a massive box set designed for the 30k era, focusing on the epic battles of the Horus Heresy. It typically includes a mix of infantry, vehicles, and characters, providing a solid foundation for a Space Marine army. This box is perfect for players who love the lore of the Heresy and want to field a thematic force.

In terms of building experience, the Horus Heresy kits are known for their intricate details and variety. You'll find modular components that allow for customization, making each model unique. The plastic quality is excellent, and the kits are a joy to assemble for both beginners and veterans. The box often includes transfer sheets and bases, adding to its value.

• Includes multiple infantry squads, a vehicle, and a character model.
• Highly detailed plastic kits with extensive customization options.
• Ideal for building a thematic 30k Space Marine force.

What Do Age of Sigmar Starter Sets Offer?

Age of Sigmar starter sets, such as the recent ones featuring the Stormcast Eternals and Kruleboyz, offer a different experience. They are designed to get you into the game quickly with two small forces, a rulebook, and gaming accessories. These sets are perfect for beginners who want to learn the game or for players looking to start a new army.

The miniatures in AoS starter sets are also high quality, with dynamic poses and detailed sculpts. They are generally easier to assemble than some Horus Heresy kits, making them more accessible to newcomers. The included rulebook and dice provide everything you need to play your first games right out of the box.

• Two complete small armies to start playing immediately.
• Includes rulebook, dice, and other gaming essentials.
• Easier assembly, great for beginners.

Comparing Value and Playability

When comparing the Horus Heresy Siege Assault Battle Group to AoS starter sets, the value depends on your goals. The Siege Assault box offers a larger, more cohesive force for a single army, which is excellent for building a 30k collection. It's a significant investment but provides a strong core for a Space Marine army, especially if you plan to expand with units like the Warhammer The Horus Heresy: Liber Auxilia.

On the other hand, AoS starter sets are more affordable and give you two armies, allowing you to share the hobby with a friend or have a variety to paint. They also include the core rulebook, which is a must-have for playing the game. If you're just starting out or want a low-cost entry, an AoS starter set might be the better choice.

• Siege Assault offers a larger, single-army force.
• AoS starter sets provide two armies and a rulebook.
• Consider your budget and whether you want a full army or a sampling.

Painting and Customization Potential

Both boxes offer fantastic painting opportunities. The Horus Heresy kits are known for their intricate details, perfect for painters who enjoy highlighting trim and adding weathering. The Age of Sigmar miniatures, with their dynamic poses and varied textures, are also a delight to paint. For those looking to add special effects, products like Citadel Technical: Mordant Earth can add a cracked earth texture to bases, enhancing the overall look of your models.

When it comes to customization, the Horus Heresy kits shine with their modularity. You can mix and match parts to create unique units, while AoS starter sets are more straightforward but still allow for some personalization with different head options and weapon choices.

• Horus Heresy kits offer extensive customization.
• AoS miniatures have dynamic poses that are fun to paint.
• Use technical paints like Mordant Earth for basing effects.

Which Warhammer Box Should You Choose?

Ultimately, the choice between the Horus Heresy Siege Assault Battle Group and an Age of Sigmar starter set comes down to your preferences. If you're a fan of the Horus Heresy lore and want to build a detailed Space Marine army, the Siege Assault box is a solid investment. It offers a substantial force and a rewarding building experience. You can even expand your collection with the Warhammer The Horus Heresy: Liber Auxilia to add more depth.

If you're new to Warhammer or prefer a more accessible entry, an Age of Sigmar starter set is the way to go. It provides everything you need to start playing immediately and allows you to explore two different factions. Plus, the lower price point makes it easier to take the plunge.

• Choose Horus Heresy if you love 30k lore and want a detailed army.
• Opt for AoS starter if you're a beginner or want a quick start.
• Consider expanding with themed units like the Liber Auxilia.

Both the Horus Heresy Siege Assault Battle Group and Age of Sigmar starter sets are excellent choices, but they serve different purposes.
